"CHIP-WAR" is one of those unassuming games that perfectly demonstrate just how creative the era of 8-bit computers could be. The game was released in 1987 for the Commodore 64 and published by Rainbow Arts as part of the "ANTICS" compilation, which contained four small games: CHIP-WAR, Elvin, Mini-Boulder, and Dulcedo Cogitationis. The game was created by Peter W. Thierolf, and one of its distinctive features was its simultaneous two-player gameplay.
The story of CHIP-WAR is unusual because, instead of a traditional narrative, we are presented with an electronic battlefield. Players move around a board resembling the inside of an integrated circuit, navigating between traces and electronic components. The objective is to repair damaged sections while simultaneously avoiding and fighting the opponent. The idea was simple, but it suited the capabilities of the Commodore 64 perfectly: instead of a vast game world, players were given a small, abstract "micro-world" where ordinary circuit-board traces became the battlefield.

An interesting fact is that "CHIP-WAR" later received something of a successor in the form of a game called "Inside." Released for Atari 8-bit computers, the game was based on the C64 version of CHIP-WAR and similarly revolved around moving through the inside of an electronic system and repairing damaged components.
Today, CHIP-WAR is primarily an interesting reminder of a time when developers had to come up with original ideas in order to turn simple mechanics into something distinctive. The game was not a major hit on the scale of Rainbow Arts' later productions, but it fits nicely into the history of the C64 and the era's experiments with unconventional game concepts. Interestingly, the music for CHIP-WAR was composed by Chris Hülsbeck, one of the most recognizable composers associated with the European computer game scene of the 1980s.
