Montezuma’s Revenge is one of those retro games that could keep players hooked for hours despite its simple graphics. Created by Robert Jaeger and published by Parker Brothers in 1984, it quickly became a classic of the early home-computer era.
The Hunt for Treasure
You play as Panama Joe, a treasure hunter exploring the dangerous underground chambers of an Aztec palace. Along the way, you’ll find treasures and keys while avoiding snakes, bats, traps and plenty of other dangers.
The biggest challenge isn’t just defeating enemies, but finding your way through the maze. You have to jump, climb ropes and ladders, and keep an eye on the clock. One wrong move can bring your adventure to a quick end.
A Fun Fact
Panama Joe wasn’t always called Panama Joe. In the original version of the game, Robert Jaeger called the character Pedro. The name was later changed by Parker Brothers before the game was released.
Montezuma’s Revenge is a great example of how developers could create an addictive and memorable adventure even with the technical limitations of early computers.
