Karateka – Love, Kicks, and No Save Game (aka ’80s Hardcore)

*Karateka* (1984) is one of those games that proves that back in the day, all you needed was a few pixels, a little drama, and absolutely no save option to create something truly iconic. Created by Yale student Jordan Mechner, it was his first step toward the success that would later come with *Prince of Persia*. Even then, though, he showed that he knew how to combine atmosphere, animation, and frustration in just the right proportions.
The story is painfully classic: the evil Akuma kidnaps Princess Mariko, and a nameless hero sets out to rescue her. Along the way, he gets punched in the face by guards, avoids traps, and occasionally has to convince a hawk that it would really be better off leaving him alone. The whole thing boils down to a simple formula: go right, beat up everything that moves, and try not to die – which is harder than it sounds.

The gameplay combines elements of a fighting game and a platformer, but without any of the modern conveniences. Your health bar disappears quickly, recovers slowly, and every mistake can mean going all the way back to the beginning. With no checkpoints, the game tests your patience more than your reflexes, and winning feels about as satisfying as surviving a Monday without coffee.
Despite its simplicity, *Karateka* stood out from other games of its era thanks to its realistic animations and cinematic sequences. That distinctive style became the foundation for Mechner’s later projects. Today, the game may seem primitive, but back in its day, it was a small revolution – and a great reminder that once upon a time, the biggest boss in a game… was the game itself.
